Each little bowl is hand built, and one-of -a-kind. Two of the bowls have scrafito “indulge” and “delicious” subtly scribed on the side. They are bisque-fired, smoke/sagger-fired, then sealed with Liquid Quartz.
Liquid Quartz is a food safe, permeating sealer designed for use on unglazed ceramic ware, rendering it waterproof and stain resistant. It creates an invisible, long lasting, protective barrier against moisture, food juices, & other contaminants. It is made from Silicon Dioxide/Silica, a naturally occurring oxide & one of the most abundant minerals found in the Earth’s crust, most commonly in the form of Quartz. It is highly abrasion resistant (7 on the Mohs scale) & thermal shock absorbing. Liquid Quartz is certified food safe to the stringent EU food safety standards. It is essentially self-cleaning, being hydrophobic & oleophobic; resisting staining from oil, grease, acids, alkalis & alcohol, reducing the need for chemical cleaners & harsh detergents. Water will simply bead off, taking surface contaminants with it. Please note that prolonged contact with some foods may still mark the sealed surface. To avoid this, plates should be rinsed clean as soon as possible. They are dishwasher & microwave oven safe to 450°C (also stable to -70°C), and also antibacterial.
Saggar Firing is the crude process of working with organic materials deliberately trapped inside containers (saggars) with the sole purpose of making random and beautiful, organic marks. The containment of organic materials within the saggar transforms these materials from solid to gas, releasing the naturally occurring oxides & minerals found within them. When starved of oxygen & unable to escape into the atmosphere, the vapours seek air from deep within the clay, permeating the surface. Together with the smoke itself, the effect is a random transference of colour, pattern & texture.
